A new study has revealed the US states which are most and least affected by mental illness.

The research, from online pharmacy and prescription referral service Universal Drugstore, analyzed a range of factors, including the total number of adults with mental illness, access to treatment and the number of psychologists available, to reveal the best and worst US states for mental health.

According to the study, Utah ranks as the state with the most adults affected by at least one mental illness. As of 2022, over a quarter (27%) of adults report having some form of mental illness. Utah is closely followed by West Virginia (25%), Oregon and Ohio (24%).

Conversely, New Jersey is the state with the fewest number of adults affected by any mental illness, indicating that living in the region promotes a more positive mental state for most people. As of 2022, the rate of adults affected by mental illness is at over one in six (16%) for the state. Texas, Florida and Hawaii follow closely behind with 17% of adults affected by mental illness.

Overall, the study named Nevada as the worst state in the United States for mental health. The state ranked within the top five for states with the highest number of poor mental health days reported and the highest number of youths who had experienced depressive episodes (18%).

Nevada also ranked within the top 10 states for the most adults who were untreated for mental illness (58%), the fewest beds available in mental health facilities and the highest proportion of mentally unwell adults who couldn’t afford to see a doctor.
